How can I become a Product Manager? Is perhaps the most asked question of all (after ‘What does a Product Manager do?’). There is no shortage of articles, courses and coaches looking to help you with this, and I’ve linked below to a set of resources that will act as a starting point. Obviously when the time comes you’ll also want to look at Preparing for a Product Management Interview.
A few common themes in pretty much everything you’ll read on this.
- It’s a journey: Getting that first Product gig isn’t going to happen over night. You may well have to take a
- The easiest move is internal: Simpler to change function within the same organisation, where you have both domain expertise and (hopefully) a good reputation and network.
- Use your network: Speak to people you know who might help; or even just give you guidance. Don’t be afraid to reach out to PMs on LinkedIn.
- Build something - anything: If you have the opportunity to get close to some product work in your current role. Do it. If you have an idea for something: try building it.
- Don’t let rejection get you down: but also don’t be deaf to what it’s telling you. If you’re constantly getting knocked back; try a different approach.
The best bit of advice I can give actually comes from one of my favourite online guitar teachers, Tomo Fujita: ‘Don't worry! Don't compare! Don't expect too fast! Be kind to yourself!’
